High School Grenville

Our School

Our History

In 1941 Rustenburg saw the start of a Commercial High School with an enrolment of 35 scholars instructed with two fulltime teachers. The first permanent principal, Mr C.J.F Jacobs, was appointed in 1946.

Mr S.C.M Naude, the second principal assumed duty in 1958 and Mr H.A. Lambrechts held this post from 1960 to 1975. During Mr Lambrechts’ tenure it was proposed that the Commercial High School be changed to an English Medium School. It was subsequently decided on 23 August 1973 that Rustenburg would have an English Medium School. The commercial orientated school underwent gradual changes to become an academically orientated one.

On 9 January 1974 the first English speaking academic pupils were enrolled and on 27 January 1975 the first governing body was elected.

Mr H.R Miller, the newly appointed principal, assumed duty on 5 January 1976. The enrolment numbers were 465 learners with a staff of 29 members. The Department of Education notified the school that it would officially be known as Grenville High School.

The badge and motto:

In 1979 Grenville High School adopted a slightly altered badge and incorporated a motto.

The badge features the name of the school at the top, the palm leaf emblem, and the motto: Palma Victoribus Praemium, in the scroll at the bottom.

The palm leaf is symbolic of righteousness, justice, fairness and victory.

The motto means: “The palm is the reward of the victorious.”
